Nighttime Multilayered Cloud Detection Using MODIS and ARM Data

چکیده
This study reports on recent progress toward the discrimination between pixels containing multilayered clouds, specifically optically thin cirrus overlying lower-level water clouds, and those containing single-layered clouds in nighttime Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Cloud heights are determined from analysis of the 15-mm CO2 band data (i.e., the CO2-slicing method). Cloud phase is inferred from the MODIS operational bispectral technique using the 8.5and 11-mm IR bands. Clear-sky pixels are identified from application of the MODIS operational cloud-clearing algorithm. The primary assumption invoked is that over a relatively small spatial area, it is likely that two cloud layers exist with some areas that overlap in height. The multilayered cloud pixels are identified through a process of elimination, where pixels from single-layered upper and lower cloud layers are eliminated from the data samples. For two case studies (22 April 2001 and 28 March 2001), ground-based lidar and radar observations are provided by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) Clouds and Radiation Test Bed (CART) site in Oklahoma. The surface-based cloud observations provide independent information regarding the cloud layering and cloud height statistics in the time period surrounding the MODIS overpass.

Nighttime polar cloud detection with MODIS
Cloud detection is the first step in studying the role of polar clouds in the global climate system with satellite data. In this paper, the cloud detection algorithm for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) is evaluated with model simulations and satellite data collocated with radar/lidar observations at three Arctic and Antarctic stations. Results show that the current MODIS cl...

Conventional single-layer cloud assumptions lead to erroneous results in satellite retrieved cloud properties for multilayered multiphase cloud systems. Radar cloud-top heights were retrieved at both the Chilbolton Facility for Atmospheric and Radio Research, UK (CFARR) and the ARM Southern Great Plain site, USA (SGP), using millimetre wave cloud radars and identical algorithms. The resulting cloud-top heights were used for comparison with MODIS and MISR retrieved cloud-top heights, from March 2000 to October 2003. Both imaging instruments resi...
متن کاملAutomatic Cloud Detection and Removal Algorithm for MODIS Remote Sensing Imagery
Cloud is one of the most common interferers in Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrum-radiometer (MODIS) remote sensing imagery. Because of cloud interference, much important and useful information covered by cloud cannot be recovered well. How to detect and remove cloud from MODIS imagery is an important issue for wide application of remote sensing data. In general, cloud can be roughly divided ...
